Our experienced management team are focused, through their roles and responsibilities, to ensure consistent quality, traceability and systems maintenance with established QA procedures. From experts on abalone farming and centres of excellence on the WWF steering committee to develop international standards for environmentally sustainable abalone farming, to researchers responsible for the continuous improvement of the quality of the feed, they are here to advise our customers on best practices.
After completing a degree in Agricultural Food Science I began working for Clover South Africa as a Quality Assurance Manager and over time gained further experience through appointment into positions of Quality Assurance Regional Manager, Operations and Marketing Manager and Site Manager at various companies in the food industry. In 2016 I joined the Marifeed team as General Manager and am excited to work in a company supplying such an interesting market. I place a strong emphasis on customer service, quality and consistency in manufacturing and improving the performance of our feeds.
I have been in Marine Aquaculture for 30 years, starting as a Research Biologist for the Fisheries Development Corporation of South Africa in 1969 after graduating from the University of Stellenbosch.
Aquaculture moved very slowly in South Africa in those days and wishing to join the industry, I entered the competitive environment of the fishing industry in 1979, working in a white-fish processing factory, where I became the Factory Manager. In this environment I was exposed to many production, management and business disciplines that were very useful in later years. I became one of the pioneers of abalone farming in South Africa when I started Aquafarm in 1995. This enterprise, centered on abalone production and feeds, processing and marketing, has developed into a mariculture group that now employs around 400 people. I retired as CEO of TerraSan Mariculture in 2012 and am now able to spend more time with Marifeed, which I feel has a big role to play in the future of aquaculture. I bring experience in disciplines such as Business- and Strategic Management, Quality- and Process Control, on-farm feed management for abalone and abalone producer markets. Being a passionate student of aquaculture, I have travelled extensively and studied feeding systems in Chile, New Zealand, Australia, China, USA and Korea. Environmental sustainability is a priority in Marifeed and it is significant in this respect that I served on the International Steering Committee of the World Wildlife Fund tasked with developing international standards for environmentally sustainable abalone farming. I serve as director on a number of boards in the group.
After completing an MSc degree, which focussed on abalone production, I joined the abalone farming industry as a Research & Development Manager in 2008. I obtained a broad range of experience in abalone production while also gradually focussing more of my time on the production of abalone feed. My initial role at Marifeed was as manager of research and development and I grew into a broader management role through appointment as a Director in 2014 and as Managing Director in 2015. Together with the Marifeed team my drive is to unlock the potential of our people and of our business and its products.
I am the Quality Assurance Manager at Marifeed. I have worked for the company for 10 years. My main role has been implementing and maintaining systems to ensure quality standards are reached and traceability procedures are in place. I have a B.Sc Consumer Science (Food) degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (UNISA). I am also responsible for ABET training to help illiterate employees develop their communication skills.
I am the Production Manager at Marifeed and have been with the company since 1995. I lead and motivate the Marifeed production team to produce a range of high quality feeds for the South African abalone industry as well as several international abalone markets. Raw material procurement from sustainable sources is of the utmost importance to us. My role is to ensure they meet the strict quality standards set. This combined with our well developed production methods will ensure that the farmers receive the consistent, quality product for which ABFEED is well known.
