the abalone lifecycle

1. The genetic breeding programme has been in place since 2006. The adult brood stock are only fed kelp. These abalone are numbered and can be 35 to 40 years old. 2. The males are kept in separate tanks above the females in a vault. Permits are in place to remove brood stock from the wild every 3 years. The brood stock spawn every 6 weeks.
3. The spat are shielded in a cone with gentle bubbling water. 4. They are then moved to grow out tanks and start feeding off plates.
5. Once they are of a certain size, they are moved outside to grow out tanks and are fed specially formulated pellets. 6. At 10 cm the abalone have grown to market size and are ready for harvest.
