abfeed

ABFEED is an advanced aquafeed, produced to a specialized formulation for abalone, which improves growth rates cost effectively. ABFEED has exceptional water stability and is used successfully by all of the South African abalone farmers, some in combination with kelp. At Marifeed we aim to provide the best service levels to our customers. Ask us to advise you on the best products for your needs.

ABFEED Products and Formulations

ABFEED is designed, manufactured and continuously tested on our abalone farms in Hermanus and Gansbaai. We have formulated feeds for every life stage of the abalone. Our feed formulations are listed below and are suited to various species of abalone. Ask us, should you require further information.

formulations

formulation : ABFEED S34

ABFEED S34

feed make up feed conditions launched other

34% Protein

S34 is the original ABFEED formulation which can be used for abalone from the weaning stage up to marketable size. Not recommended for H. midae at temperatures exceeding 20°C.

Launched 1994 and greatly improved through R&D and farm trials to date.

Kelp can be added on request. Pellet sizes can be custom made to suit the farmer's application. High protein level requires good water exchange rate. Could be problematic in some recirculation systems.

formulation : ABFEED ES26

ABFEED ES26

feed make up feed conditions launched other

26% Protein

Research showed that H. midae grows just as well on this formulation for abalone from 15 mm to market size. More suited to higher temperatures, but is effective from at least 14°C.

Formulated through research at Rhodes University and launched in 2010.

Developed to allow farms sustainability certification. The lower protein levels improve water quality through reduced ammonia production.

formulation : ABFEED ES22

ABFEED ES22

Protein content is further reduced. Developed for abalone potentially exposed to highly stressful environmental conditions, such as warm water events which may lead to 'bloating'.

Use during periods when abnormally high seawater temperatures are expected as experienced on the east coast of South Africa. Best performance will be at higher temperatures for Haliotis midae, i.e. above 18°C.

Specially formulated for farms on the South African south coast which experienced extreme water temperatures in 2008.

Growth rates and production yields could be compromised when feeding for long periods, i.e. months rather than weeks.

pellet forms

pellet : Standard Pellets

Standard Pellets

specifications formulation

10 mm x 10 mm x 1.2 mm. Used from early on-growing (10 mm) to market size. Can be used in most systems and gives a good spread on the surface areas.

Available in all formulations - S34, ES26 and ES22.

pellet : Long Pellets

Long Pellets

specifications formulation

10 mm x 40 mm x 1.2 mm. Some farms prefer a longer pellet as they feel this reduces losses during feeding.

Available in all formulations - S34, ES26 and ES22.

pellet : Leaf Pellets

Leaf Pellets

specifications formulation

30 mm x 30 mm x 1.2 mm. This is becoming more and more popular in systems where feed is more easily lost through holes in the grow out containers. Where feeding takes place on a mesh surface, pellet size is more important.

Available in all formulations - S34, ES26 and ES22.

pellet : Grade 2 Weaning

Grade 2 Weaning

specifications formulation

High protein. Weaning feed. Pellet size 2 mm.

Grade 2 weaning is a successful feed formulated for the weaning stage. Hygiene is important, remove excess feed daily. Ensure good water flow.

pellet : Grade 1 Weaning

Grade 1 Weaning

specifications formulation

High protein. Weaning feed. Pellet size 1 mm.

Grade 1 weaning is a successful feed formulated for weaning abalone from diatoms and seaweed to formulated feed. Hygiene is important, remove excess feed daily. Ensure good water flow.

pellet : Sugar Grain Weaning

Sugar Grain Weaning

specifications formulation

High protein. Weaning feed. Pellet size less than 1 mm.

Grade 1 weaning is a popular feed formulated for the weaning stage. Hygiene is important, remove excess feed daily. Ensure good water flow.
